Being stressed out isn’t unique to the western world. But westerners certainly report more stress than those in the east. A 2019 Gallup poll found that the US ranks fourth in the world for the most stressed out population! So while we’re pros at being stressed, it might be time to take a page out of eastern medicine’s book when it comes to chilling out. Here are some eastern herbs that help you ease the stress on both your body and mind.
Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha is an Ayurvedic herb that’s well-known for its stress-relieving properties. As an adaptogen, Ashwagandha helps the body deal with the physical effects of stress, like inflammation and high levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. Cortisol levels can go down by as much as 30% just by taking Ashwagandha!
And studies have found that it also affects the brain by decreasing feelings of anxiety. Based on animal research, scientists think this is because Ashwagndha blocks the stress pathways to our brains. The Mimosa we’re talking about is a flowering tree, also known as Albizia julibrissin. Not only do the beautiful pink Mimosa flowers smell amazing, but they’re also a potent Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) antidote for stress.
It’s name in Chinese means happy tree and it helps our bodies process the physical impacts of stress so we don’t get sick. It’s loaded with anti-inflammatory properties and is chock-full of antioxidants. Animal studies have revealed that Mimosa drastically reduces feelings of stress and can improve sociability, so it’s great for those with social anxiety. And as a bonus, a study done on rats in Mexico discovered that Mimosa even has antidepressant effects that are comparable to prescription meds.
